Is Meltek legit?

Yes. Meltek is a Brooklyn-based company and an approved demand response aggregator for Con Edison. We also work with PSEG Long Island and Orange & Rockland customers. We pay New Yorkers to use less electricity during peak demand events — and it's free to join.

Why would anyone pay you to use less electricity?

On the hottest summer afternoons, New York's grid gets close to its limit. Utilities can either fire up expensive, polluting “peaker” power plants, or pay customers to use a little less for a few hours. The second option is called demand response, and it's run through official utility programs.

One household turning off the AC for an afternoon doesn't move the grid. Thousands of households doing it at once does. Utilities pay approved aggregators like Meltek to coordinate those reductions, and Meltek shares that payment with the people who make them.

That's the whole business: the utility pays Meltek, Meltek pays you. You never pay us.

How Meltek works with Con Edison

What to realistically expect

Most frustration with programs like ours comes from expectations that were set too high. Here's the straight version.

You earn by using less, not by signing up

Rewards are based on how much you reduce during an event compared with your usual usage for those hours. If you use more than usual — guests over, laundry running, AC working harder — the event comes back negative, and future earnings clear that amount before reaching your balance.

Individual events pay a few dollars

Most events pay a few dollars each. It adds up over a summer season, when most events happen, but it won’t replace a paycheck.

Rewards take time to land

We can only credit you after your utility sends your meter data for the event. Depending on your utility and how your account is connected, that takes anywhere from a few days to about a month.

You choose how to cash out

Withdraw your balance to your bank (powered by Stripe), redeem it for gift cards (via Prizeout), or put it toward verified climate projects (with Ecologi).

Your utility account stays yours

  • Meltek is not an energy supplier. We don't switch your supply, change your rate, or take over your utility account.
  • You keep paying your utility bill directly to your utility, exactly as you do today.
  • We use your utility data to measure your reductions and pay you. The details are in our privacy policy and our Trust Center.

Is Meltek a scam?
No. Meltek Inc. is a New York company and an approved demand response aggregator for Con Edison. It also works with PSEG Long Island and Orange & Rockland customers. Utilities pay aggregators like Meltek to reduce demand on the grid during peak hours, and Meltek shares that money with the customers who make the reductions.
How does Meltek make money?
When lots of households reduce electricity use at the same time, that combined reduction has value to the grid. Meltek coordinates those reductions during peak events and is paid for them through utility demand response programs and energy markets. Meltek passes a share of that payment to you. You never pay Meltek.
Does Meltek cost anything?
No. There are no sign-up fees, subscriptions or equipment costs to join the demand response program. You can participate without any smart devices.
Is Meltek part of Con Edison?
No. Meltek is an independent company. Con Edison approves a small number of aggregators to run demand response for its customers, and Meltek is one of them. You keep your Con Edison account and keep paying your bill to Con Edison as usual.
Will Meltek change my electricity supplier or my bill?
No. Meltek is not an energy supplier and does not switch your supply, your rate or your utility account. Your utility connection is used to read your usage so we can measure your reductions and pay you for them.
Why does Meltek need my utility account number?
Your account number lets us enroll you in your utility’s demand response program and read your meter data, which is how we measure how much you reduced during each event. Without it we can’t calculate or pay your rewards.
Why did an event come back negative or $0?
Every event has a baseline: an estimate of how much electricity your home would normally use during the event hours. For Con Edison customers, it is worked out from your own usage on recent similar days. If you used more than that baseline — for example, heavy appliances ran or an automatic thermostat adjustment was overridden — the event comes back negative. That amount is held in a reserve, and your next earnings clear it before anything reaches your available balance. You never owe Meltek money out of pocket, and you can ask support for an hour-by-hour breakdown of any event.
