ConEd Smart Meters: What They Do, Reading Your Data, and Opting Out
Updated July 3, 2026 ยท Independent guide by Meltek โ not Con Edison
ConEd has rolled smart meters out across nearly all of its territory. They end estimated bills, unlock interval usage data you can actually act on, and serve as the eligibility key for programs like Smart Usage Rewards.
ConEd spreads the details across several small FAQ pages; here is the consolidated version.
What a smart meter changes
The meter records usage in short intervals and reports it automatically โ no meter readers, no estimated reads, no access appointments. Your ConEd account gains an Energy Use dashboard where you can see daily and intraday usage, compare periods, and spot what is driving your bill.
Installation is performed by ConEd at no charge. If your building has not been converted yet, ConEd schedules installations area by area.
The data is the point
Interval data turns bill mysteries into answers: the overnight baseline shows your always-on load (old fridge, dehumidifier), afternoon spikes show cooling costs, and comparing a hot week to a mild one quantifies exactly what summer does to your bill.
That same data stream is how demand response participation is measured โ reductions during events are verified against your meter, which is why an installed smart meter is a requirement for Smart Usage Rewards. It is also the mechanism behind Share My Data, ConEd's system for authorizing third parties (like Meltek) to read your usage with your consent.
Opting out
You can decline a smart meter, but opting out typically involves a recurring charge to cover manual meter reading, and it locks you out of the programs and data above โ including Smart Usage Rewards. Confirm the current opt-out terms with ConEd if you are considering it.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a ConEd smart meter cost anything?

- How do I see my ConEd smart meter data?
- Log in to your ConEd account and open the Energy Use section. Usage appears in short intervals with daily and period comparisons.
- Do I need a smart meter for Smart Usage Rewards?
- Yes. Event participation is verified against interval data, so the program requires an active ConEd electric account and a smart meter.
- Can I opt out of a ConEd smart meter?
- Yes, but expect a recurring manual-read charge and loss of access to interval data and data-dependent programs. Check current terms with ConEd before deciding.
