But today, we are on the brink of disastrous and catastrophic consequences — extreme pollution, severe weather, the decimation of habitats of bees and other ecosystems —  if we continue this unbridled consumption. When demand exceeds supply, utilities resort to firing up peakers.

In New York State, peakers contribute as much as 94% of the state’s NOx emissions on high-ozone days. The peakers in NYC are primarily located in low-income neighborhoods, where they are linked to many life-threatening illnesses. And, the cost of electricity from them is up to 1,300% more expensive than the average cost of electricity in the rest of the state. In 2019, 79 out of the 89 peaking units in NYC operated for less than 5% of the time (less than 500 hours). Sixty of them ran for less than 1% of the year (less than 100 hours).

In most cases, you’ll be notified of upcoming Swarm events 24 hours in advance. In Con Edison's NYC territories, demand response events are organized by networks and call windows, which don't coincide with typical neighborhood boundaries or occur at the same time. For example, in the Times Square network, the demand response call window is 11am-3pm, while Williamsburg, Brooklyn is 4pm-8pm. So just because you don’t receive a text alert or email notification to reduce your consumption, doesn't mean that we don't have you on our radar.

No, you do not. When you get notified of upcoming Swarm events, you can then plan to turn off your appliances, lights, computers, etc., manually, and maybe go out to a movie or dinner. You can also install smart strips and plugs so you can turn things off remotely. If you want to add a smart thermostat it will give you the ability to opt-in automatically as well as control your thermostat from your mobile device.
